Samsung Dishwasher Recall for Fire Hazard
In March 2017, Samsung voluntarily recalled approximately 519,000 dishwashers sold in the United States due to a fire risk caused by moisture intrusion into the dishwasher’s electrical connections. The recall was issued in cooperation with the CPSC after Samsung received 7 reports of dishwashers overheating, including 2 reports of fires that caused property damage. No injuries were reported.
Hazard Description
During normal dishwasher operation, moisture can migrate into the electrical junction box where the power cord connects to the dishwasher’s internal wiring. Over time, this moisture accumulation can corrode electrical connections and create resistance points that generate excessive heat. In the worst cases, this overheating can ignite surrounding plastic components or nearby combustible materials, posing a fire risk to the home.
Affected Units
The recall covers Samsung dishwasher models manufactured between June 2013 and January 2017 with model numbers beginning with DW80F, DW80H, DW80J, and DW80K. These units were sold at major retailers including The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and independent appliance dealers nationwide. The model number is located on the rating label on the left side of the dishwasher door, visible when the door is open.
What You Should Do
If you own an affected Samsung dishwasher, Samsung recommends that you continue to use the appliance but only while you are at home to monitor it. Do not run the dishwasher overnight or when leaving the house. Contact Samsung at 1-800-726-7864 to schedule a free in-home repair, during which a technician will install a protective moisture barrier over the electrical connection point. The repair takes approximately 30 minutes and eliminates the fire risk.
Post-Repair Verification
If your Samsung dishwasher has already received the recall repair, look for a small blue dot sticker on the front of the machine near the rating label, which indicates the repair was completed. If you purchased a pre-owned Samsung dishwasher and are unsure of its recall status, contact Samsung or schedule an inspection with our team. We can verify the repair status and inspect the electrical connections for any signs of moisture damage or corrosion.
