Samsung freezer water line safety — here is what you need to know.
Samsung Water Line Safety and Maintenance
Samsung refrigerators with built-in ice makers and water dispensers require a water supply line that connects from your household plumbing to the back of the refrigerator. This water line operates under constant household water pressure and is one of the most common sources of residential water damage when it fails. A burst water line behind a refrigerator can release gallons of water per hour, causing extensive damage to flooring, subflooring, cabinetry, and adjacent rooms before the leak is discovered.
Water Line Types and Risks
Many Samsung refrigerators are installed with plastic (polyethylene) water supply lines, which are included with some models or sold as inexpensive installation kits. These plastic lines are prone to cracking, kinking, and failure — especially when the refrigerator is pushed back against the wall and the line is crimped. Copper tubing is more durable but can develop pinhole leaks from corrosion over time. The safest option is a braided stainless steel water supply line, which resists kinking, bursting, and corrosion far better than plastic or copper alternatives.
Inspection and Replacement
Inspect your Samsung refrigerator’s water supply line at least twice per year. Carefully pull the refrigerator away from the wall and examine the entire length of the water line for kinks, bulges, cracks, discoloration, or moisture. Check the connection fittings at both the refrigerator inlet and the household water valve for drips or mineral deposits that indicate a slow leak. Replace plastic water lines immediately if any damage is found. Replace any water line that is more than five years old as preventive maintenance.
Emergency Preparedness
Know the location of the water shutoff valve that supplies your Samsung refrigerator’s water line. This is typically a small valve on the wall behind the refrigerator or under the kitchen sink. Practice turning it off so you can respond quickly in an emergency. Consider installing an automatic water shutoff valve or leak detector behind the refrigerator that will cut the water supply if a leak is detected. If you discover an active water leak, shut off the water supply valve immediately and contact a professional for repair.
