Samsung Induction Cooktop: Pacemaker Proximity Warning

Samsung induction cooktop pacemaker warning — here is what you need to know.

Samsung Induction Cooktop and Pacemaker Safety

Samsung induction cooktops generate electromagnetic fields to heat cookware directly through magnetic induction. While these electromagnetic fields are safe for the general population, they may interfere with the operation of cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and other implanted electronic medical devices. Samsung includes a pacemaker proximity warning in the user documentation for all induction cooktop models, and it is important that affected individuals understand the risks and precautions.

How Induction Electromagnetic Fields Work

Unlike gas or electric resistance cooktops that heat a burner surface, induction cooktops generate a rapidly alternating electromagnetic field beneath the glass surface. When a compatible ferromagnetic pot or pan is placed on the cooking zone, the electromagnetic field induces electrical currents in the cookware’s base material, generating heat directly in the pot or pan. The electromagnetic field is strongest directly above the induction coil and decreases rapidly with distance, but it can extend several inches beyond the cooktop surface.

Risk to Implanted Medical Devices

Cardiac pacemakers and ICDs contain sensitive electronic circuits that can potentially be affected by strong electromagnetic fields. Interference may cause the device to misinterpret the electromagnetic signal as a cardiac rhythm, potentially inhibiting pacing when it is needed or delivering an inappropriate shock. The risk depends on the type and settings of the implanted device, the power level of the induction cooking zone, and the distance between the person’s implant and the cooktop. Most device manufacturers recommend maintaining a minimum distance of 24 inches between the implant and the induction cooking surface.

Precautions for Affected Individuals

If you or a household member has a cardiac pacemaker, ICD, or other implanted electronic medical device, consult with the cardiologist or device manufacturer before using a Samsung induction cooktop. Maintain at least two feet of distance between your implant and the active cooking zones. Do not lean over the cooktop while burners are active. If you experience dizziness, heart palpitations, or other unusual symptoms while near the induction cooktop, move away immediately and contact your physician. Consider alternative cooktop types such as gas or electric resistance if your medical device manufacturer advises against proximity to induction fields.
