Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Maybe. If 4E is caused by a simple supply valve issue, the dishwasher is safe once water flow is restored. If the inlet valve has failed, the machine will not fill regardless and cannot be used until repaired.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Fix the water supply issue and press Start or power cycle via the breaker. The 4E code will clear when the dishwasher detects adequate water flow on the next fill attempt.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Water is leaking from the supply connection under the sink, The inlet valve buzzes but no water enters.
Symptoms You May Notice
Dishwasher does not fill with water
The cycle starts but no water enters the tub, and the machine stalls after a few minutes.
4E or 4E1 displayed on panel
The control panel shows the water fill error code, halting the wash cycle.
Dishes come out dirty and dry
If the dishwasher partially fills but not enough, dishes are poorly washed and may still have food residue.
No sound of water entering
Normally you hear water rushing into the tub during the first minutes — with 4E, this sound is absent.
Possible Causes
Closed water supply valve
The supply valve under the sink was accidentally closed during plumbing work or is only partially open, restricting water flow.
DIY PossibleClogged inlet filter screen
The mesh filter at the dishwasher water inlet traps minerals and debris over time, reducing flow below the minimum required.
DIY PossibleFailed water inlet valve
The solenoid-operated inlet valve inside the dishwasher fails electrically and no longer opens when commanded by the control board.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Open the supply valve
Locate the dishwasher supply valve under the kitchen sink. Turn it fully counter-clockwise to ensure maximum water flow.
If the valve is stuck, do not force it — old valves can break. Call a plumber if it will not turn.
-
2
Clean the inlet filter
Turn off the supply valve. Disconnect the water hose from the dishwasher inlet. Remove the small mesh screen and rinse it under running water. Reinstall and reconnect.
On Samsung dishwashers, the inlet is usually at the lower-left behind the kick panel.
Tools required -
3
Test water pressure
Run the kitchen hot water faucet for 2 minutes. If pressure is low, the issue is household plumbing, not the dishwasher.
Samsung dishwashers require minimum 20 psi water pressure for proper filling.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Supply valve is fully open and filter is clean but no water enters
- The inlet valve makes no sound when a cycle starts (no click or hum)
- Water pressure at the sink is adequate but the dishwasher still does not fill
