Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. If the drain filter was simply clogged and you have cleared it, the washer is safe to use. However, if the drain pump is failing, running additional cycles can cause water to overflow or the motor to overheat.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. After clearing the drain path, close the filter and run a drain-and-spin cycle. The 5E code will clear once the washer successfully drains. Power cycling (unplug for 60 seconds) can also clear the code.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Water overflows from the drain filter opening when you attempt to clean it, The drain pump makes grinding or screeching noises.

Symptoms You May Notice

Standing water remains in the drum

After a cycle ends or is interrupted, water remains visible inside the tub and does not drain away.

5E error displayed on control panel

The digital display shows 5E, halting the current cycle at the drain phase.

Drain pump hums but water stays

You can hear the drain pump motor running but the water level in the tub does not decrease.

Foul odor from the washer

Stagnant water remaining in the tub develops a musty or sour smell, especially in warm environments.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain filter

The coin trap filter at the front-bottom of the washer accumulates lint, coins, hair ties, and small debris over months of use, eventually restricting water flow enough to trigger the drain timeout.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or elevated drain hose

The drain hose behind the washer can kink against the wall or be installed too high above the standpipe, preventing gravity-assisted drainage.

DIY Possible
3

Failed drain pump motor

The electric drain pump can burn out after 5-8 years of use, or its impeller can be jammed by foreign objects that passed through the filter. The motor may hum without spinning.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the drain filter

Open the small access panel at the lower-front of the washer. Place a shallow pan and towels below. Slowly turn the drain filter cap counter-clockwise — expect water to flow out. Remove all debris and rinse the cap.

Some Samsung models have a small drain tube next to the filter for controlled draining — pull this first to reduce the initial water rush.

  2. 2

    Inspect the drain hose

Pull the washer away from the wall and check the drain hose for kinks or tight bends. Ensure the hose end sits in the standpipe at no more than 36 inches above floor level. Straighten any kinks.

Do not push the drain hose more than 6 inches into the standpipe — it can create an airtight seal that prevents drainage.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Drain filter is clean and hose is properly positioned but water still does not drain
  • Drain pump motor does not run at all — no humming or vibration when drain cycle activates
  • Water drains very slowly even after clearing all visible blockages
