Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. If 5E is caused by a clogged filter, the dishwasher is safe to use after cleaning it. If the drain pump has failed, running additional cycles will result in water backing up in the tub but does not create an electrical hazard.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Clean the drain filter, clear the hose, and press Start or power cycle the dishwasher. The 5E code will clear once water drains successfully.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Water is leaking from under the dishwasher onto the floor, The drain pump makes grinding or screeching sounds.

Symptoms You May Notice

Standing water in the bottom of the tub

After a cycle ends or is interrupted, a pool of dirty water remains at the bottom of the dishwasher.

5E or SE code on display

The control panel shows the drain error, halting the cycle at the drain phase.

Dishes are sitting in dirty water

Food particles and cloudy water surround the lower rack dishes because the drain phase failed.

Foul odor from the dishwasher

Stagnant water and trapped food debris produce a sour or musty smell, especially in warm kitchens.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain filter

The drain filter system at the bottom of the tub traps food particles and debris. When not cleaned regularly, it blocks water from reaching the drain pump.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or blocked drain hose

The drain hose routed under the counter to the sink or disposal can kink, collapse, or become blocked with food grease that hardens over time.

DIY Possible
3

Failed drain pump

The drain pump motor burns out after years of use, or the pump impeller jams on foreign objects like glass fragments or seed pits.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the drain filter

Remove the bottom dish rack. Twist and lift out the cylindrical filter in the center-bottom of the tub. Remove the flat mesh filter beneath it. Wash both under running water with a soft brush.

Samsung recommends cleaning the drain filter monthly. Most 5E errors are resolved by this step alone.

  2. 2

Check the drain hose and disposal

Look under the sink at the drain hose connection. Straighten any kinks. If connected to a garbage disposal, run the disposal to clear it. Check that the disposal knockout plug was removed during installation.

A high loop in the drain hose (secured near the top of the cabinet) is required to prevent backflow.

  3. 3

    Run a test cycle

After cleaning the filter and checking the hose, run a quick rinse cycle and listen for the drain pump activating at the end.

If you hear the pump running but water does not drain, the blockage is in the hose, not the pump.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Filter is clean and hose is clear but water still does not drain
  • The drain pump is silent when it should be running
  • Water drains extremely slowly even after clearing all visible blockages
