Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe.

Can I reset the code?

Yes.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Water is leaking from the ice maker area onto freezer shelves or floor, The ice maker makes loud grinding or clicking noises during harvest attempts.

Symptoms You May Notice

Ice maker stops producing ice

The ice maker tray fills with water but never harvests because the sensor cannot confirm the ice is fully frozen.

8E error code on display panel

The control panel displays 8E, and the ice maker indicator light may flash or turn off.

Partial or malformed ice cubes in the bin

The harvest cycle may trigger at the wrong time, ejecting partially frozen or undersized ice pieces.

Water overflows from the ice maker tray

If the sensor misreads, the control board may refill the tray before the previous batch has frozen, causing water to spill into the freezer.

Possible Causes

1

Failed ice maker thermistor

The temperature sensor on the ice maker tray develops an open or short circuit from constant exposure to extreme cold and occasional water contact during filling.

2

Corroded sensor contacts from water splash

Water from the fill valve splashes onto the sensor wire connections over months of use, causing corrosion that degrades the electrical signal.

Requires Professional
3

Ice blockage interfering with the sensor

A slab of ice from a previous incomplete harvest sits against the sensor, insulating it and producing constant low-temperature readings that confuse the cycle timing.

DIY Possible

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Reset the ice maker

Locate the ice maker power button or switch (usually on the front or side of the ice maker module). Turn it off, wait five minutes, and turn it back on. On Samsung Bespoke models, you can also reset via the SmartThings app.

Some Samsung ice makers have a dedicated test button — press and hold it for 3 seconds to force a harvest test cycle.

  2. 2

Clear ice from the tray and sensor area

Remove the ice bin and inspect the ice maker tray. If a slab of ice is stuck, pour a small amount of warm (not hot) water over the tray to free it. Wipe the sensor area dry.

Never use sharp tools to chip ice from the ice maker — you can puncture the water fill tube or damage the sensor.

  3. 3

    Full power cycle

If the ice maker reset did not clear 8E, unplug the freezer for five minutes. This resets the main control board and all connected modules including the ice maker.

After a full reset, wait 2-3 hours for the ice maker to complete one full cycle before checking for ice production.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • 8E returns after every reset and the ice maker produces no ice at all
  • The ice maker tray fills with water but never initiates a harvest cycle
  • Visible corrosion or water damage on the ice maker wiring harness
